Badminton Bonanza over the weekend

By Dr Renée Ralph, Co-Founder and Alexander Circosta, Social Media Lead, The Brilliant Foundation

PERTH, Western Australia - Badminton is an ancient sport that was played in Asia, India and China, and Europe more than 2000 years ago. Originally it was played with what was known as a battledore and shuttlecock before a net was introduced for its play in India in mid-1800s.

Where did the name Badminton come from? The game is named for Badminton, the country estate of the Dukes of Beaufort in Gloucestershire, England, where it was first played around1873.

Over the weekend, Sensory Media organised a two-day badminton competition held at The Perth Badminton Arena in Canning Vale. Over 150 participants came to watch and compete for the Kingsbridge Cup 2022.

Alexander had a chance to interview our badminton players from our Asian migrant community in Perth, their cultural heritage linking back from Malaysia, China, Singapore, Indonesia and Australian born Chinese.
